How to be an excellent employer

We can all play a part in tackling human trafficking – in our homes and at work.

Forced labour and domestic servitude only become a problem when we lose sight of our customs and traditions.

If we follow the principles of our faith, holding all in respect, then we can be sure we are doing the right thing.

Respect for every person, whatever their background or beliefs, is a foundation stone of Omani culture.

This is our best defence against forced labour and domestic servitude. Every worker in the home or in the workplace is entitled to fair treatment and decent conditions.

And it’s in our own interests to treat employees as we would wish to be treated. Happy employees are productive employees. Studies have shown that happiness has a bigger effect on productivity than salary.

And studies also show that on average happy employees are 12% more productive.

It is well established that happiness in the workplace is directly linked to a positive environment and how well the employer understands and responds to the employee’s needs and feelings.

If we look after our employees well, they will work well – they will take care of us and be loyal and productive.

We should always remain courteous, professional and pleasant. Small gestures extended to our staff and workers can mean a lot. We should always try to communicate effectively with them. Listening carefully to what people say is the foundation of good communication.

If there is a problem with their performance, then talk to them constructively about it. Explain calmly what the problem is and work with them to find a solution.

Employees seriously want to know how they are doing. As long as you point out the good and bad performance and give suggestions about how they can do better, your employees will welcome the feedback and will work to become better. No one likes to feel incompetent in their job.

Clear and positive communication combined with respect is the way to achieve great performance.
Together we prosper.
